Yarn/Wire is hosting its ninth annual International Institute, an incubator for sonic collaborations between performers, ensembles, composers, and creators, serving as an ecosystem for emerging and world-class artists to collectively push the boundaries of music, performance and sound. Over the duration of the program, participants from around the world, including both instrumentalists and composers, collaborate on new and existing works, participating in performances, collaborations, talks, and workshops.
This year’s faculty members include Yarn/Wire—Russell Greenberg and Sae Hashimoto, percussion; Laura Barger and Julia Den Boer, pianos—in addition to Anthony Cheung and Zeena Parkins. More guest artists will be announced soon!
COMPOSITION FACULTY
-
Performers/ensembles will rehearse pre-existing and newly composed repertoire alongside Yarn/Wire members and work with composer/creator participants to create new collaborative projects. These works will be presented as part of the Institute Festival concerts.
They will also participate in private lessons and coaching sessions with Institute faculty; and participate in masterclasses, workshops, and discussions led by guest artists.
Performers of any instrument or voice type are invited to apply. Pre-formed chamber ensembles (unconducted up to 8 players) are encouraged to apply to work on existing or new repertoire, and will have access to mentorship sessions.
-
Composer/creators will compose a 5-7 minute piece to be performed by Yarn/Wire members and performer participants, as well as work with performer participants on new collaborative projects. These works will be presented as part of the Institute Festival concerts.
They will also participate in private lessons, coaching sessions, and forums with Institute faculty; and participate in masterclasses, workshops, and discussions led by guest artists.
-
The institute is open to performers and composers 18 years and older, and there is no application fee. Composers and performers with full-time faculty positions will not be considered.
Yarn/Wire has a history of performing music from a wide variety of styles and genres, and as such welcomes applicants from diverse musical backgrounds. We have played works using standard western notational practices as well as music written using experimental notational systems, graphic scores, and verbal instructions. We have worked with improvisation, both free and structured. We have also worked with composers and musicians who do not notate their music and/or have not studied music in an institutional setting.
